Progress

The “X” Main Street Corporation, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, purchased the vacant, blighted Bing Theater from the City of Springfield in December 2004. The front section of the building has been completely renovated with a new roof, new systems, new glass, insulation, and brand new signs installed on the marquee’s façade. The restrooms have also been completely refurbished and are now fully accessible.

The two attached storefronts and theater’s center foyer have been prepared as gallery and arts education space. The lobby can be used for performances, screenings, and meetings. It has the feel and ambiance of an intimate coffeehouse/jazz club and is ready to serve the community as a cultural gathering spot.

Programming has begun with our First Fridays performance series, children’s motion picture production and multi-cultural studio/appreciation classes. The Bing Arts Center’s premiere exhibit, “Upcycled”, is in place. Events, exhibits, and classes will be added incrementally, growing to a full-time schedule.

Plans are being formulated to renovate the former 900-seat theater section of the building as well. Although the project’s scope is daunting, the potential rewards are great! We are considering the development of a 60-seat cinema, a 350 to 400-seat performance/cinema space, offices, and classrooms within the big room. Once the plans and renderings are complete, a construction budget will be established and a fund development campaign will be launched.
